2014 DC-Area Guide to Pick-Your-Own Apples & Pumpkins
Fall brings cooler weather, vibrant colored leaves, and pumpkin and apple picking! Living in Loudoun County, we’ve been spoiled with an abundance of terrific farms. Since I’m often asked where we like to pick pumpkins, our family’s favorite orchard is Wegmeyer Farms, a 19th century farmstead in Hamilton, VA that offers pick-your-own pumpkins. It’s nicely laid out; you don’t have to walk a mile to get to the pumpkins; and, the price of their pumpkins is one of the cheapest around, at $0.50/lb (with no additional entrance fee!). For apples, we love Marker Miller Orchards in Winchester, VA – not only are they affordable and have gorgeous fields, but their apple cider donuts are AMAZING. Since it’s quite a trek out to Winchester, we recently tried Mackintosh Fruit Farm in Berryville. Crowds were minimal in the morning, and we had a delightful time picking fruit – in fact, you can read our review here.
